My perfect day out is photography filled and having a good old rake in a charity shop, car boot sale, auction or junk yard. I just love finding random vintage fabrics, pictures and ornaments to photograph.
Last week I was up in Shetland for work and visited the Aith Charity shop one evening – if you love a bargain and complete randomness then this is the place for you – and, as far as I am concerned, it is photography heaven.
Another even bigger inspirational gem is on the island of Whalsay at the ‘Shoard’ charity shop. It is well-worth a visit for a good old rummage, I would even go as far as to agree with other seasoned bargain-hunters that it is the actual mother load – This one does require complete dedication though as you need to get a ferry to it – yes, it is safe to say that I am obsessed with my quest for a bargain and a photograph of something just that little bit different.
You have to get your timing right though as opening hours are limited for both places;
Aith Charity Shop – Opening hours: Sunday 2.30pm – 4.30pm, Tuesday 2pm – 4pm, Thursday 7pm – 9pm.
Shoard (Whalsay) – Opening hours: Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 2pm – 4pm.
Piles and piles of bargains and inspiration await you in Shetland and even in the highly unlikely event that you walk away with nothing, all is not lost! As the scenery is to die for.
